Mary Francis Berry spoke with Phil Glende. Berry, author of the new book “Five Dollars and a Pork Chop Sandwich: Vote Buying and the Corruption of Democracy,” was the keynote speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. dinner at Indiana State University on Friday. Berry is a longtime activist for civil rights, gender equality and social justice. She was the chairperson of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission under President Bill Clinton and also served on the commission during the Carter administration. She spoke about developments racial and gender equality in the last 50 years, current issues such as the Black Lives Matter movement, and other topics.
